Leaky valves in the veins around the groin or behind the knee cause most varicose veins. In order to determine where the problem is an ultrasound scan will be performed. The scan is harmless and painless and can be done in the outpatient clinic.
Very occasionally other scans are sometimes needed like MRI and CT. Unfortunately these can’t be done in the outpatient clinic and will require a separate appointment.
